Bird Feeders

A little over a week ago my parents took Maggie to the cabin for the night. One of the things they did with her was make peanut-butter-pine-cone-birdseed bird feeders. Apparently Maggie was more interested in eating the peanut butter than actually covering the pine cones (really though, can you blame her?). They brought the feeders back to our house and Maggie, Chad and I hung them together. She was more interested in doing that and now we can watch out our window for hungry little birds.

Bird Town

Here's a photo of our newest additions to the backyard. We bought three super cute birdhouses and put them on shepherd hooks. This week I'm going to buy seed for them so the birds will have something to eat. I wonder how long it'll be before we see a bird on one of them?

Container Gardening

This weekend my parents brought us a huge glazed green pot for our front entryway. (Thanks Dad and Mom!) Last night Chad and I went shopping at Lowe's for shade plants and this is the combination we came up with. We already had the fern in the center--it was kindly planted by a bird at Chad's house in San Diego. The rest of the greenery is new.

Birdie

This little birdie has been sitting on the fence near my kitchen most of the morning and afternoon. I think she likes my neighbor's park-like backyard. She also must have friends nearby because she's been singing like crazy. I can't wait to get settled on our backyard so birds will want to spend time back there too.

I didn't want to scare her away so I used a super zoom on my camera. I'm thinking that's why the color is so muted.
Anyone know what kind of bird she is?
Edit: My friend Loren's coworker supplied me with some additional information. Turns out my she-bird is a HE-bird called a House Finch.

Peanut Feast

The amount of snow at the cabin this weekend was unbelievable. This photo shows the snow level on the back deck--way over our heads! On Sunday my dad fed peanuts to a number of blue jays and a few squirrels in the area. We could tell they were hungry. The birds cracked the nuts on a nearby branch and the squirrels gnawed on the peanuts like a corn cob. It's only February and there's still lots of winter to go. I'm sure the little guys appreciated the mid-winter snack.
