Dentist

Earlier this month Maggie had her third dental appointment. What a difference between this one and her last two (at 2 years and at 2.5 years)! She laid down patiently in the chair and let the hygienist and the dentist do anything they wanted to with her teeth. Yeah! They were able to clean and floss her teeth, perform x-rays and give her a fluoride treatment. At the end, as always, she got a bag with a new toothbrush and toothpaste, floss and lip gloss, a pink helium-filled balloon and a book. She chose a board-book about concrete mixers. Go figure. Oh, and because she has (mostly) stopped sucking her fingers she got a gift certificate for a free Jamba Juice.  I am so proud of her and how well she did at the dentist this visit.

Smashed

A little over a week ago Maggie and I went to lunch with friends. Everything was great: the food, the company, the kids' behavior...and then it happened. Just before we were getting ready to leave two of Maggie's fingers got smashed inside a heavy industrial strength metal door. CRAP! She was immediately able to move and use them so we knew they weren't broken, but the skin on the underside was torn-the-heck-up. She didn't cry right away. She looked at me in shock. Then the tears came and she was super sad. I was sad for her. I ran as fast as I could but just couldn't get there fast enough to save her.

It's funny (just slightly) because Maggie is all about safety. She loves seat belts, helmets, etc., but for some reason her little fingers are completely fascinated by the cracks in doors. Maybe this incident will stop this fascination? We can only hope.

Dentist

Maggie had her first trip to the dentist last week. I know I'm a year late getting her on the dentist train, but sheesh, she still doesn't even have all of her teeth so give me a break.  We went to a pediatric dentist near us and the office was great. I am not going to brag about Maggie and her bravery because she left that in the car for this first visit. The visit started with the hygienist showing Mags the dental instruments, which thought were pretty cool. The hygienist then put the spinning brush on Maggie's fingernail to show her how it worked and Maggie thought that was OK too. When it came time to get that brush in her mouth? Forget it. She didn't even want to sit in the chair anymore. So instead Maggie showed them how well she brushes her teeth with a regular toothbrush (standing up).  After waiting just a minute the dentist came in to examine her mouth and teeth before giving her a fluoride treatment with a little brush. Once again, she did just OK. This exam consisted of Maggie laying on my lap, me holding her arms down and the dentist gently exploring her mouth. The office assured me that it's typical for a 2-year old not to want to be there, so I'm not going to be hard on her about it. At the end Maggie picked out an orange balloon and an Elmo book to take home (to go with her new toothbrush, paste and floss) for being a good patient. The photos above were taken when things were going well. Ha!

Crapeola

Recently we had the displeasure of experiencing roseola with Maggie. Poor little thing didn't know what was going on and honestly, neither did we. A friend of ours suggested we not rule out roseola when, on the fourth day of a 100+ fever and no other real symptoms of anything, we had to cancel some fun plans with her family because of Maggie's condition. Turns out she was right. After Maggie's fever broke she got the rash. It appeared pretty heavily on her butt, upper legs, arms and face. I was assured that the rash wasn't itchy and that it wouldn't hurt (thank goodness!) and fortunately that seemed to be the case for Mags too. She ran around the house looking horrible but feeling just fine. Thank goodness that's over.

Ouch

Maggie has been a bit accident prone this week and to top it off, this is the same week she got a few vaccination shots. Her body's doing great. Ha!

This first accident was from the water park. Yes, the fun little water park we went to on Sunday. Maggie was crawling around enjoying herself in the water and it wasn't until we took a sno-cone break that Chad noticed the blood on her feet. Turns out that crawling on cement, even when wet, isn't a smart thing to let a baby do. So in reality, was it an accident or bad parenting? Let's go with accident.

The second injury happened yesterday. After coming in from the car I put Mags down on the bathroom floor so I could pee. She got mad at me (wanted to stay in my arms) and threw a little fit, smacking her mouth on the floor tile. When the blood finally stopped I was happy to find just a split lip and nothing more. But still...yuck. Her Boo Bunny came in handy for the first time and thankfully it did help ease her pain.

Hopefully for the rest of the week everyone will remain happy, healthy and accident-free.

Food

Now that Maggie's six months old (almost) and showing interest in food other than the boob we decided to take the plunge and feed her rice cereal. Yum, yum. For those of you who haven't had the luck of trying it before, it basically tastes like watery flavorless goo. And Maggie, not having much to compare it to, loves it! Her first taste of cereal was Saturday and she dove for it at each spoonful. We thought she'd push it out of her mouth, but this girl ate it and wanted more.

Fast forward to Tuesday. After Chad set up Maggie's high chair we plopped her in it for an evening snack. And without a hitch she was at it again.

Welcome Maggie!

Wednesday evening, just two days after my due date, our little Maggie arrived. After a night of contractions Chad and I went to the hospital Wednesday morning and they admitted me, saying we were ready to go. The doctor broke my water around noon, I got my epidural around 2:30, started pushing close to 6:30 and just before 8:30 Maggie was born. Whew!

She's a beautiful little girl and we're so excited to have her. More photos to follow but right now there is lots to do and not enough time to do it!

Garden Update

We have tomatoes, grapes, basil, red bell peppers, cucumbers and zucchini growing in our garden right now. Everything has taken off and a couple of our tomatoes are almost ready. The roma grape tomatoes look like they'll be the first to ripen and I can't wait to try one!

We also have some Washington Navel oranges sprouting. They're not anywhere close to being ready, but at least they're starting to look like oranges.

37 Weeks!

Today my pregnancy officially hit full-term. About 3 weeks (give or take) to go! I should have taken the photo AFTER I got my hair done, but of course I didn't think about that until later.

34 Weeks

For those of you I haven't seen in awhile, here's my latest belly photo. It was taken during my 34th week of pregnancy, which I'm currently still in. Less than six weeks to go!

23 Weeks

A few people have asked to see belly photos. I've taken them periodically for the baby book and to watch how I've grown. Here I am at 23 weeks -- officially in my 6th month.

Glasses

So Chad and I are getting our eyes checked in a couple weeks. After I made the appointment I thought maybe it would be smart to see if we like the frames the office had to offer. Today we spent about an hour there (fun!) playing around to see what looked good on us. We have no idea if we'll need glasses or not, but we figured just in case we might as well be prepared. Here are the glasses we narrowed down for Chad:

And here are the choices for me. I really don't think I'll need any. Maybe for looking at the computer and for reading, but otherwise I think my eyes are fine. If I have to get some I'll get one of these two pairs. What do you guys think? I thought the first pair looked good but everyone in the glasses office (including Chad) agreed that the second pair was way better. By the way, neither pair are as dark in real life as they look in this photo.
